GWM China Fruit Import Update: Grapes&Cherries, Week 46 2015

The market saw no clear cut dominant fruit in week 46, as citrus volume from the southern hemisphere has been reducing while other products arrive with similar more limited volumes. The focus of many on the market has been geared towards the coming Peruvian and Chilean supply, namely Red Globe, blueberries and of course cherries.

Shanghai’s weather was warmer than previously forecast however still considerably colder than the south of China. Guangzhou saw rainfall affect the regions on the weekend which also brought with it cooler temperatures. The forecast for week 47 is for rainfall and cloudy conditions in Guangdong province as Shanghai also receives winter rainfall. Temperatures are predicted to be steady during the week.

Grapes
U.S.A. Autumn Royal continued to dominate the grape market, followed by a range of different varieties such as Red Globe, Autumn King and a range of red seedless varieties. Peruvian Red Globe volumes have been slow to start with departures till week 45 slowly increasing. Autumn Royal remained in a large price range with Guangzhou showing a slightly wider price range possible as almost double the volume has arrived in this market compared to Shanghai. High quality Autumn Royal with green stems and consistent large dark berry size were able to find movement in the range ¥280-300 (9kg), while arrivals showing either more reddish colouration or slightly dried out stems priced in the range ¥250-260 (9kg). Fruit priced at the lower end of the market at between ¥200-230 (9kg) generally showed smaller sizing and could be coupled with more sever reddish berries or dried out stems. Red Globe from the U.S.A remained available in limited supply. A notoriously popular brand arrived in Guangzhou market at the start of the week and sold out at high prices of between ¥270-280, this however was an exception to the general market with most U.S.A Red Globe available priced in the range ¥210-240 (9kg) with movement largely depending on quality. Peruvian Red Globe also remained limited in the market with few arrivals in both south and east China. Prices too were in a large range as there wasn’t much fruit to compare and popular brands did well. Popular brands arriving in Shanghai showing consistent colouration coupled with green stems and bloom sold out at between ¥210-220 (8.2kg), while average quality Red Globe in Guangzhou moved slowly at between ¥120-140 (8.2kg).

Cherries
Since the first Chilean cherries began to arrive in the market on Monday there has been little heard about South African cherries. Prices of Chilean early varieties such as Brooks, Royal Dawn and Early Rainier were at between ¥900-1,000 (J, 5kg) and ¥1,000-1,100 (SJ, 5kg) at the start of the week. Movement however slowed as the week continued putting pressure on price particularly in Guangzhou. Some arrivals of Brooks in Guangzhou decreased in price to between ¥500-550 (J, 5kg), while the first Santina later in the week moved well at between ¥1,050-1,150 (J/SJ, 5kg). Buyers however acutely aware of the volumes to come and have been quick to negotiate price down.
