Golden Wing Mau Report on Grapes Week 26, 2015

For the whole market of imported fruits in Shanghai and Guangzhou city, the extra demand that was felt in week 25 due to the Dragon Boat Festival disappeared. As a result fruit that were supported the most saw prices decrease. Fruit however in short supply did not see a noticeable change in price levels, as fruit with ample availability remained under pressure. As for the weather in the past week, it was more favorable than expect in South China, but Shanghai was not fortunate and had heavy rains affecting the market in the past week. Week 27’s forecast is for continued warm temperatures with Shanghai continuing to receive rainfall.

Availability of all grape varieties became scarcer in week 26, with most fruit receiving good demand provided quality was up to reasonable standards. Grapes with a more marginal arrival quality were still accepted to a certain degree and at favorable prices. As southern hemisphere grapes were on their last legs the focus of buyers has been more towards local produce where Red Globe can be purchased at between ¥70-130 (6.5kg), and black seedless at ¥90-110 (6.5kg). U.S.A grapes are likely to start entering the market in weeks 31/32, how exporters decide to price fruit and the risk appetite of importers still to be seen.

The season of southern hemisphere grapes is drawing to an end and the statistics from Golden Wing Mau show an increase in most grape varieties imported from Chile to China. Exports of Chilean Red Globe to China increased 8 percent compared to 2013/14 season reaching 9,356.3K cartons, up 14 percent on 2012/13 season. The volume of Chilean Crimson to China was 605.93K cartons in 2014/15 season, a 20.06 percent increase on the previous year, however this represents a 14.46 percent drop on the amount of Crimson imported in 2012/13 season. The exports of Chilean Autumn Royal to China continues its decline. The volume of Autumn Royal arriving in China was 559.96K cartons, a drop of 23.59 percent and 20.85 percent respectively compared to 2013/14 season and 2012/13 season. Chilean Midnight/Sug13 registered a slight increase. This year the volume of Midnight/Sug13 coming to China from Chile was 178.19K cartons, an increase of 3.17 percent and 6.56 percent on the 2013/14 season and 2012/13 season.
