GWM China’s Imports of Fruit Weekly Update: Week 39/2015 Apple

Week 39 saw a dramatic slow-down in the market, both movement as well as price was affected. As mentioned previously sales in week 38 were positive with buyers purchasing stocks for the up and coming festival. It is likely that buyers decided to postpone purchases as they already had sufficient stocks for their expected sales or that they want to purchases at lower prices. This slow-down affected the entire market unless supply was limited. Oranges were the most dominant import product and was impacted to a great extent.

For the weather, the start of week 39 saw rainfall impacting the Guangzhou market, while Shanghai was mostly cloudy with some sporadic rainfall over the course of the week. The forecast for week 40 is for mostly cloudy conditions in the south of China as Shanghai receives rainfall mid-week. Temperatures in Guangzhou however will buck the downward trend and be warmer in week 40.

The apple market saw little fluctuation during week 39, with prices of Royal Gala, New Zealand Queen and Red Delicious all remaining quite similar to the previous week. Although prices remained similar movement for Royal Gala and New Zealand Queen slowed, while Red Delicious was favorable. In general Chilean Royal Gala remained difficult with only limited brands able to return considerably higher prices than most of the available fresh arrivals and stock. Most of the produce visible on the wholesale market continued to show a good overall red colouration, however this was contrasted by a yellow background colour, and a less pleasurable eating quality. Most Premium specification Chilean Royal Gala continued to price in the range ¥220-240 (count #100/113, 19.2kg), while premium unconventional sizes priced between ¥180-210 (count #80/90/125/138). Unconventional sizes packed as extra fancy or the like only found limited movement at decreased values. The movement of New Zealand Queen slowed down during the week while prices remained on a similar level. Price differences which have been seen since the beginning of the season between brands have continued to persist and were amplified during good sales periods. Aged stocks remain visible and still found difficult movement at low prices. A large percentage of the available fruit continued to price and find sales at between ¥380-410 (count #70/80, 17.6kg) as better quality produce with more consistent colouration and limited marking asked ¥20-40 higher. Top of the range NZ Queen remained above the ¥500 price level, still finding good demand from loyal buyers. Supply of Red Delicious was slow to start and as a result price remained favorable for both new arrivals and stock. Most of the fresh crop of Red Delicious opened with asking prices of between ¥320-350 (count #72/80, 20kg), while some high quality brands showing good visuals opened asking between ¥360-370 (20kg). Movement for Red Delicious remained positive as a result of constrained supply and despite higher prices.

Chilean Royal Gala exports to China and Hong Kong till week 37, year to date volumes are up 7.5% at 825k cartons shipped. Exports in week 37 and the previous four weeks have been limited as the season comes to a close. Chilean Royal Gala saw an overall stable market during the 2015 season. There were however notable periods with price pressure, most notably at the beginning of the season when large volumes of supply were available and again during the tailend. This due to a combination of less consistent condition and local apple substitutes.
